Lime Odyssey Composer Spotlight

Hey Music Fans!

Here’s a first taste of Lime Odyssey’s amazing soundtrack, created and composed by the renowned Yasunori Mitsuda.  He has composed and worked on music for over 35 video games, including titles such as Chrono Trigger (SNES), Xenogears (PS1), Chrono Cross (PS1) and Xenosaga Episode 1: Der Wille zur Macht (PS2).   His vast experience helps bring the music of Lime Odyssey to life.

Though this is his first Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) soundtrack, Lime Odyssey’s music production shines through with Mitsuda’s signature touch. By immersing himself into the game, the pieces he has composed perfectly complement the aesthetics of each area while establishing the mood and tone to correlate with the progression of time. Each respective area has variations of its main theme to reflect the cycles of day and night throughout the world of Orta. Instrument choice strongly comes into play with these compositions and for anyone familiar with his previous works will feel a sense of nostalgia as they play through Lime Odyssey.

The theme for the Human designated town of Blue Coral has a predominate piano melody setting the homely pace for this sea port town as the accompanying strings carry the melody which cause it to resonate into the surrounding areas of Blue Coral Forest. This piece is a prime example of Mitsuda’s minimalistic approach in the majority of his compositions.

The main theme for West Tumbara Plains starts off small and builds up to this grandiose march which fits perfectly with the progression of the Turga as they press forward on their journey towards the Lime. Using light strings, woodwinds, and brass to correlate with the vastness of the plains, and then leading into the introduction of the drums to further instill the sense of progression, Mitsuda complements the Turga’s strong willed personality while taking their surroundings into account with this piece.

The theme for the Muris hub of Pripet is very light and airy while still maintaining and earthy tone as it completely fits the ambiance of the lush and colorful forest of the floating Shimmering Isle. The lively strings and piano coupled with the woodwinds and bells inject the area with life and magic. This piece is a prime example of the tea-loving Muris and another example of Mitsuda taking all the factors of a setting into consideration for his compositions.

AdventureQuest Worlds – Bring out your Undead!

Doom, Darkness, and epic battles against the Undead! All are found in DoomWood, the last bastion of Light in a land overrun by skeletons, slimes, and other necrotized nasties. With the introduction of the DoomWood zone, we wanted to take familiar characters and offer a new look at a favorite video-game theme – the clash between Light and Dark, Good and Evil.

The Art of DoomWood

In the Necropolis, Noxus – a character first introduced in one of our online RPGs, DragonFable – created the ultimate in evil: Vordred, the PaladinSlayer! And to make sure the AQWorlds players knew what they were up against, we asked one of the AQWorlds artists to design an incredibly intimidating armor. Offered a sneak peek on Twitter, the players loved it!

But to do the character justice, it had to be the biggest, baddest, boniest monster they’d ever seen! What was needed were MORE SKULLS! (Really, there was no more room, but company philosophy says that anything is possible if we have determination and unlimited quantities of caffeine!) So, mouse in one hand and overly-full coffee cup in the other, Vordred’s artist proceeded to spend hours placing and rearranging skulls onto the armor until a final, epically-skullicious version was agreed upon:

A coder passing by got a glimpse of the new art and quipped, “So we heard you like skulls on your skulls…” At once, everyone finished – “And on FIRE!” (At Artix Entertainment, we know our memes! And we haven’t added flames to Vordred’s armor… yet.)

The Story of DoomWood

So far, in the zone’s first week, AQWorlds’ heroes visited LightGuard Keep and the surrounding, undead-filled forest and found out a dark, twisted monster was hunting Paladins.

One of my favorite parts about LightGuard Keep is that ALL the NPC names – like Lady Speedstyk – are based off of deodorants. Paladins get REALLY smelly in all that heavy armor, so the naming convention makes perfect sense! (You NEVER want to ask a Paladin to raise his hand if he’s sure about something!)

Week two saw the players journeying through the Chopping Maul (where else would a Necromancer find Bloodbath & BodyWorks, GraveStop, or Scarbucks?) to Zorbak’s Hideout.  As the only Necromancer NOT currently trying to slay the hero, he was their best source of advice on how to save DoomWood. Knowing less than he’d ever willingly admit, Zorbak suggested they look in the Necropolis. But to get in, they’d either need to become a Necromancer (we LOVE making the players go undercover!) or present a Necro U Student ID.

Week three is where the storyline is currently, and what we have in store for them is an undead-doozy! The players will have two choices – they can either accept quests at the Tower of Necromancy to concoct a counterfeit Student ID, or they can play through the Tower of Necromancy itself.

The Tower has ten floors of puzzles which get increasingly difficult. IF they make it to the top, they’ll meet the Master of the Necropolis and earn the right to become a full Necromancer! Either way, after this they’re off to the Necropolis, and the Undead DOOOOM that awaits them!

DoomWood’s storyline is written – for the most part – but since we look to our players for feedback and ideas after every release, there’s always a chance that the ending could change drastically!

The PotionMistress behind the Pen

Who am I kidding, I haven’t willingly used a pen to write something since 1997. I’m Alina, one of the AQWorlds writers and designers. While groan-worthy puns and creative consonance delight me, my character has a passion for potions and poisons and currently serves King Alteon as the Royal PotionMistress. You can always find me or more information on AdventureQuest Worlds at www. AQ.com!

Steam Expands Store To Include Free-To-Play MMOs

Steam_Logo

Steam has long been a fantastic digital download service for players looking to buy both games at full price and games on the cheap. However, If you’re the kind of game player for whom buying games “on the cheap” is still too expensive (or you live in a region where retail sales aren’t feasible in the market) Steam has been ill-equipped to deliver the kinds of games that you want to play.

Never one to let any potential PC based revenue stream slip them by, Valve has announced that, as of today, Steam will support the release and distribution of Free-to-Play games in additional to the paid games already available from the service. With this new update, players can not only download F2P games from Steam, but also purchase each game’s microtransactions from the Steam Client itself.

Another in a continuing series of hacker exploits, Codemasters has sent word that its servers have been breached. In a e-mail sent to all account holders earlier today, Codemasters acknowledged that its website, eStore and CodeM database have all been accessed.

Not alone in this new wave of cyber attacks are Epic games. Those of you with accounts with either of these developers should read on.

Retail PC Games for Free? Legally?

Gamersgate  recently announced a new service coming soon by which gamers can play retail games from major publishers for free. There is a catch ofcourse and it is that you’ll need watch an ad before playing the game each time, not unlike what most of us do now when we watch videos on Youtube. Among the names of the publishers who have signed up are EA, THQ, SEGA, Ubisoft and Paradox have all come aboard. Check out their website to find out more and sign up for the beta.

E3 News Round-up

Isengard

A boatload of information came out of E3 these last couple of days and while we still process all of it, here are some of the highlights so far. We’ll be sure to update this post as it develops!

DUST 514 Exclusive To PS3… Still A Game

DYsSSSTTY

Here’s something we weren’t expecting: a PS3-exclusive shooter from a PC MMO that features direct connectivity with that same MMO. But that’s exactly what we got at Sony’s E3 2011 press conference.

Dust 514, a online first-person shooter from EVE Online developers CCP, is itself a massively-multiplayer online game of some fashion. In addition, actions that take place in either game affect the other. How, exactly, that will all work is still a matter of some question, but CCP and Sony seem confident that this universe is something worth investing in, as Dust 514 will also include Move support, have its own dedicated Home space (yay?) and find its way to the NGP/Vita somewhere down the line.

E3 Photostream

e32011

While all the cool kids of the OnRPG crew are having fun reporting the news straight from the convention floor some of us are less fortunate and have to enjoy the show from another continent!

So I was really happy when they send us a bunch of photo’s so those of us who aren’t there can still breath in some of the atmosphere! I hope you enjoy it as much as us!

E3 Begins Today

The Electronic Entertainment Expo starts in just a matter of minutes and already we’re seeing some of this years trailers start to pop up.

One such release is that for BioWare’s The Old Republic. A game which seems like it has already had more trailers released than there were episodes of Friends.

With a release date penned in for “Sometime before March 2012″ we still have a fair wait ahead of us but it’s quite remarkable how much the game seems to have improved from the very first pieces of footage we saw.

Are you looking forward to The Old Republic? Have you already an idea on what character you’ll make when launch comes round? I’m personally leaning toward some kind of Smuggler because I feel that I’d fit the shady person role rather well.
